Flavobiotics – novel, topical antibacterials from Flavobacteria

We seek to use bacteria that are predatory on other bacteria as a biocontrol agent directed against antibiotic resistant bacteria. Flavobacterium strain IR1 is a harmless microorganism which we have shown to kill MRSA and other pathogens. This is a novel idea that can be developed through the growing field of synthetic biology. We have examined the intellectual property situation and conclude that this approach can be patented to create a strong position in the commercial development of these ‘Flavobiotics’. This work has led to a NADP Value Proposition Voucher to assess the business case. The intention is then to apply for a NADP Lead Development Voucher (and other funding sources and investment) to accelerate developing a viable product.
